1998 IG/RS, A.F. Vandevorst spring—summer 1999, Paris October 1998.
There is a series of photos taken for the spring-summer show 1999 for Antwerp-based designer duo A.F. Vandevorst. For this catwalk show no make-up was used at all. The concept was that of a cleansing ritual before going to sleep. Each model’s face was thoroughly washed and scrubbed, and a rich moisturizer was applied. Then, some time before the beginning of the show, the girls laid down on old hospital beds that provided the show’s décor. By the time press and buyers arrived some of the models had actually fallen asleep. The show started when the girls woke up, with rosy cheeks and a healthy complexion. Grognard remembers this assignment fondly as it was so radically different from the usual fashion show routine and especially because the models had a really great time.
An Vandevorst & Filip Arickx: Whenever we meet with Inge and Ronald — which is quite often — they immediately want to share their ideas. Straightaway we start brainstorming on all kinds of subjects. We can’t help it: their enthusiasm, their hunger for new things and their contemporary spirit proves infectious. Working with them gets you into completely different thought processes; raw and instinctive, strong yet fragile, always extraordinary. Afterwards, when we go our separate ways, we feel exhausted but totally satisfied.
